I'm a 28-year-old student...wait, no, I'm not. I just graduated with a Master of Divinity, very sadly, because I love school. No, I'm still a student, just not formally.
Books, writing, theology, and psychology are among my passions. The Pretender draws me because of the depth of its psychological insights and questions. I have never seen a TV show that delves into psychological concepts as deeply as this one. Family, need, belonging, anger, hate, psychosis, love, Stockholm Syndrome, identity... Incredible.
I am a newcomer to The Pretender. I watched my first episode in the beginning of May 2009, and as of the middle of June 2009 I'm still working my way through Season 4. Though I'm a neophyte, as a writer, I have to write about what I love. I love The Pretender.
Right now I'm trying to write at least one drabble for each episode.
Ahh! There needs to be more! I want to know what he does!
Author's Response: Sorry, there won't be more, but glad you liked it, and many thanks for reviewing!
Who sees the world in true colours?
Ahh! My goodness. It's so beautifully Angelo, and beautifully Sydney. You seem to think about them in quite the same ways I do. I'm enjoying this very much.
Author's Response: Lol, it's nice to find a like-minded writer sometimes, isn't it?? And it seems we both have very similar takes on our characters...
I've noticed that! It's fun.
(Technically this is a reply and not a review. Sorry if it throws off your numbers or whatever.)
Reviewer: Haiza Tyri SignedI love it! I love your analysis of Gem's response to the storm and its comparison with his life at Donoterase. I'm also intrigued by your tiny section about him being the center of his world, because, interestingly enough, I was contemplating a drabble dealing with the very same issue in regard to Jarod.
Author's Response: Would be very interesting indeed to compare the two POVs... cheers again for reviewing, Haiza!
Oh, nice. I want to respond to this challenge, at some point. I'd take it in a considerably different direction, but I really like your perspective.
Author's Response: Thank you Haiza and many thanks for taking the time to review!
Oy, vey. Wonderful. Again, I'm taking Gem in a somewhat different direction, but wonderful nonetheless.
Author's Response: Cheers, I've only now restarted working on this fic, with the idea to take it in a somewhat different direction than the original plan... Thanks for reviewing!
One way it could end. Warning, character death.
This story was brilliant. Good look at the responses to Jarod's (hypothetical) death. I love it.
Author's Response: thanks Haiza, if you liked Funeral Blues you may also like its companion piece, "Undefeated".
I feel almost ashamed for liking it so much. I should not be sitting here relishing a story about Jarod killing himself. It's awful. But it's so well done! Got me straight in the gut.
I'm glad you didn't make it more graphic. For one thing, it was quite graphic enough for my poor stomach. For another thing, it worked extremely well with the tone of the whole thing to do it just as you did it.
I loved the inclusion of "Invictus," a poem I haven't thought about in a long time. It worked perfectly. And the contrast between this Jarod and the Jarod of your Gem story where Jarod returns to him and the Major and Emily is quite fascinating. Isn't it great how you can get so many different angles on the same character? I don't think I've often met a character that was so possible with as Jarod.
No, no, relish away, nothing shameful about it, it's the beauty of fan fiction!! And you're right Jarod is full of possibilities, and there are many different takes on his character. He can be very dark and mysterious, or innocent as a child... he's wonderful to work with but sometimes it's hard to find the right tone and to stay consistent...
Thanks you for a lovely review.
Reviewer: Haiza Tyri SignedBrown eyes opened silently in the darkened bedroom and he laid still under his duvet, trying to work out why he was awake in what was obviously still the middle of the night...
Ah, this story makes something hurt inside me. It's so beautiful and so sad. I want to know what happened to Jarod.
Author's Response: I want to know it too... A sequel is planned. Thanks for reviewing.
My first GWGW piece...
OK, I give up. Who is it?
Author's Response:
Ok then, it's a Sydney POV.
Reviewer: Haiza Tyri Signed...
This story is so exquisite! I love the descriptions of the way Angelo sees the others, so very much like them. Miss Parker as a tragic symphony, Broots as a bright, whimsical tune, Jarod in clear, dramatic blue, vibrant yellow, and blackness as well. But particularly the confused winteriness of Sydney, with the sun refusing to peek out, and the image of the adagio of pain... Magnificent. Truly magnificent.
Author's Response:
Hi Christy. Poor Syd is just so conflicted, even more so than the others I believe. Glad you like!
Thanks for reading and reviewing. And that rating! Wow!!
Reviewer: Haiza Tyri SignedWhile the Centre may be most famous for its insidious Pretender program, there are many other projects funded by the corporation. Chief among these, the Bishop program is responsible for the procurement, training, and handling of professional killers. This story asks the question, ‘What if something went horribly wrong?’
Very intriguing. I hope there's more coming.
Reviewer: Haiza Tyri SignedLovely glimpse into Miss Parker. Beautifully done.
