She tried to locate the reason for the team’s being here - in vain; instead her eyes found a young woman sitting under an old oak tree, a book in her lap, a young man approaching her.
Remembering, she smiled as her focus turned to the past: to another time, another place, another tree… and yet a similar scene:
Sitting alone under a pine tree, concentrated on her studies, a shadow had suddenly fallen across the pages. Annoyed, she had looked up.
“Good morning, Miss Parker,” a young man had said in heavily accented English.
Their eyes had met. “Who are you that you know my name?” she had asked coldly.
“Tommy Tanaka.”
The young man who was respected by those whose parents had resembling influence and feared by the rest had sat down next to her - uninvited. In time, strangers had turned into friends and friends into lovers.
A long, hot summer had followed.
