Bio:

I've been a fan of this show since day one, but only by the end of the third season did I come across the world of fanfiction. After reading some very good fics (and a few bad ones as well), I figured I might not be the best, but I would try my best to write as much interesting and entertaining stories as I could.

I wrote a few short stories and started four big projects (two anthologies, one novel and four-part feature scripts). The last time I've updated any of those projects was... eight years ago? I think. So it's about time I finish some of the projects that are still pending. Starting with 'The Alphabet Series' and 'Who Forgot to Pay the Rent?'. Everything is being rewritten, though some stories will only have minor changes, and will begin being posted perhaps this weak.

The idea of getting back to write for this fandom has always been on mind, but trying to make a living writing original stuff other than fanfiction is time-consuming. I don't know where this impulse came from - and no, it has nothing to do with the return of the show (excellent news!), which I only found out about yesterday, since I've been working on these stories for the past two months - but I'm looking forward to see where it will take me.

Summary: Kyle tells Jarod in Red Rock Jarod, he made his way to the road and caught a ride out after the van exploded. I thought it would be cool to write something small to fill in that time... just a little.

In this part Kyle meets a woman who is willing to help him.

Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1

In-between stories are a personal favorite of mine - even more than 'what ifs' and 'what happens next' - because they have to tie different stories and make sense in the end. That is not an easy thing to do, but the author did a pretty good job. That, combined with strong characterizations - even though there were some scenes that could use a little touch - and a fairly decent prose made this a very enjoyable story.

Author's Response:

Thanks. This was written so long ago. I'm glad you like it.

Title: Chapter 1: Rememberance

I'm going to give a positive note to this story, despite the fact that its defects surpassed its qualities. Story-wise it works - it has a few inconsistencies, but it works. What I felt to be the bigger problems here were character development and the writing itself.

The character development can be a tricky issue, because more often than not we are influenced by what read, not just by what we see. In other words, developments introduced in fanfiction stories, if we find them to be reasonable, tend to find their way into our minds and later on into our stories. I know this happens to most of us, because it has happen to me as well. There should be no shame in that. What should there be is a clear sense of who and how we want the characters to be. Creative liberties aside, I think they should be as faithful to the originals as possible. With the exception of a parody, every major change (sometimes even minor) change should be justified.

The main problem with the way you portrayed Jarod, Miss Parker and Sydney was their erratic display of emotions. They didn't act that way in the show. They didn't talk like that. Which doesn't mean that they shouldn't act that way in your story. It only means that you should have found a reason to make those actions more believable and not just a whim. We want them to be happy, probably to end up together, but we should want most of all is to write a story where what happens, happens for a reason, not just because.

In terms of writing, it's a matter of practice, mostly. I know that English isn't your native language (mine either), so just keep writing and you'll get better by the story.

Two more things, just to finalize. The first one is the individual addressing of almost review you receive at the beginning of the chapters. Not each chapter, of course, but most of them. FFN allows you to respond directly to your readers and, if that option isn't available, you can always thank everyone at the end.

The second thing is the length of the chapters. I like small chapters - these were smaller. Sometimes less is more, other times it isn't.

In general "To End The Evil" should be rewritten. Despite its failings, it is a nice story and has the potential to be a whole lot better.

Whenever I look at Sam I think to myself: 'There's a guy with a great sense of humor!' Then he draws his gun and the feeling fades, but doesn't vanish. Your story made me feel that way. No doubt Sam can be a lethal weapon, but I have the feeling he can also be quite the party-maker. (The image of Sam with a beer-keg just came to me right now.)

Title: Chapter 1: Line in the Sand

There is a small town called Almograve, near the Portuguese coast, where I go from time to time. I'm not a beach person - I like to swim, I like the sun, I loathe the chaos. Most of the time, I only go there when the beach is almost deserted because I know I will have the time and the peace of mind to relax. This story, not only was it great in terms of writing and character insight, it invoked those by the shore so perfectly that I could almost feel the salty air in my lungs.

The way the author takes us inside Mr. Lyle's mind is creepy, insidious and, yet, definitely in tune with what the show has offered to us regarding this character. It's quite an uncomfortable glimpse but, seeing that it's Mr. Lyle we're talking about, uncomfortable often equals exquisite.

Title: Chapter 1: Retrospective

I always knew this moment would come. Sooner or later, Jarod would have to make a decision regarding his relation with The Centre, particularly with Sydney and Miss Parker. After IOTH and Miss Parker's refusal to acknowledge any turning point, this was one of the possible paths that the story could go.

As for the story itself, it's touching without being sappy. It reminds me of that episode when Jarod suggests to Sydney that someday they could go on a fishing trip together. It's not an happy ending but it's one that offers closure to these two characters. (And a great start for a terrific series!)

Title: Chapter 1: Picking Up The Pieces

Before I give any review, I need to say this: Sydney with a temper... not a pretty sight. Quite intimidating as a matter of fact.

Following the consequences of Jarod's departure (as seen in 'Retrospective'), the title of this story is a perfect fit. It was presumable that Miss Parker might feel the loss of Jarod, despite her attempts to make everyone else think otherwise, but never to this extreme. As she relays her side of the story, the loss she has faced, the lies, the deceit, it's actually a surprise how long she held without snapping.

In my opinion, this one of the most important and defining stories in this series. Important because it puts Sydney and Miss Parker on a new common path. They both lost someone very dear to them and realize they can lean on each other for support. Defining because the Miss Parker this series will show us in the future is very different from the one we've known so far. THIS is the beginning of that transformation. Without this story, that evolution would not make any sense.

Title: Chapter 1: Family Ties

'Family Ties' is the third installment in this series regarding the consequences of Jarod's departure and how life continues without him. The previous story ('Picking Up The Pieces') showed us a Miss Parker well past her breaking point and an angry, yet concerned, Sydney, ready to help her get back on track. Broots and Debbie also pitch in to show Miss Parker that they're all in it together.

This is the final piece of the small puzzle inside the larger puzzle that is this series. It serves perfectly both as a closing story and a prequel by establishing the main characters in their new roles and by offering a myriad of plot combinations.

Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1: The Return

This series is like a meal at a fancy restaurant. After three great appetizers, this is first of three quite satisfying main courses. "Balancing the Scales" is the kind of story that sets a new standard on what good fanfiction should be like. The way the story is carefully built, without rushing into things, the attention to the characters, even the most secondary ones, it all makes for good reading. The only off part is the complete absence of Mr. Cox, but even that is excusable when considering everything else.

Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Taking Stock

After the scales were balanced, the time came to face some "Truth and Consequences". Like the preceding story, this is another good example of knowing your characters, whether they're the ones created by SLM and CVS and company or by author, and having a story to tell. Cleaning house at The Centre would never be an easy task and MMB shows us how hard and dangerous it could be.
This is a great story (in quality as in quantity) with plenty of action, drama, suspense and romance, but it's not without his fails. Sydney's continued incapacity for one. It's coherent, considering the time-frame, but I'd prefer to see him more mobile. The other thing I didn't enjoy so much was the excess of emotion and crying in some parts. I understand the necessity of those moments, but sometimes I think we were prying too much. Having too much of anything has the risk of turning it unimportant.
Even so, that attention to the emotional aspects of the characters is one of MMB's trademarks. In fact, I dare say she is probably one of the few who can indulge in that kind of thing and still keep her readers interested.

I hate you, MMB! Someone needed to tell you this and that someone is me. Why did you have to finish this series with such a good and long story? I had other things to do, maybe not as interesting as re-reading "Resolutions", but still. I have a life, you know? I have stories to write, stories to type, a girlfriend, I can't afford to spend this much time completely absorbed by one story.
I congratulate you for a very pleasant journey, but now it's time to focus on my own stories, okay? No more interruptions! I'll just have a quick peek at "Mindtrap" and that will be it.

It took me a while to get into full story-mode. The need of having to introduce a whole "new" universe with all the similarities and differences with the old one took a while, but it was worth the wait. Once the plot was set in motion, it was quite the exciting ride, with plenty of suspenseful twists and intense moments. It nearly felt like riding a rollercoaster - one that stops right before the finish line. Got that, leochick? The person who is typing this is interested in reading the rest of your story. The change in perspective was a nice touch and well executed. Normally, whenever such a gimmick is used, most authors have the tendency to 'tell' more about Jarod or any of the other main characters as if the person who is telling the story would know about those things.

Judy's voice is written in a way that conveys all the emotion, the trauma and the fear without falling into dangerous clichés. It is not an easy topic to write about, especially when there are children involved. KB managed to tell a powerful in just a few words. If only some novels were this good.

A good piece, nicely written. The feelings of isolation, sadness and relief from Miss Parker are described in a perfect way. My only complaint has to do with structure. The use of different "stories" kinda broke the flow. I know they're part of the same story and I liked them as isolated pieces, together...
