She closed her eyes at his confession. It wasn’t what she wanted to hear, his words breaking the unexpressed, yet acknowledged promise to never say them. She heard him ramble on about it, voice tinged with hope, nearly pleading with her to see his point.

He had broken a piece of trust between them, and in that had betrayed them.

He broke off, waiting for her answer; an answer she wouldn’t give him. The silence was heavy and somewhere in the distance she could hear the sound of something shattering. She wondered if he heard it, too.
