There was always the silence after a shooting – that breathless, stunned silence. Always that brief moment when everything seemed to stand still – only for the world to lurch forward again a moment later.

Silence after the shots in the elevator, after she had shot at Lyle, after her father had shot Raines, after, after, after. Countless of other incidents flooded her mind.

This would be one of those standstills that didn’t seem to move into fast-forward after the silence.

She watched the fallen pretender, pained gasps fading, breath slowing, eyes dulling, the accusation in them staying… and the silence prolonged.
