The Father's Day Card
By Gables

~~~~~~~~
On the fourth deliberate, but elusive walk past the card aisle she surrendered to her compulsion to enter.
'You're being impractical' she scolded herself. 'He's not going to see it. Don't waste your time like this.'
'He's still your father, and you should buy him a card.'
She stared at the cards on display, not touching them, just searching for the right cover design,
'He wasn't there for you as a child. He chose them above you. You don't owe him anything.'
'Family is the only thing I can hold on to. Don't take that from me. He still loves me.'
'He still won't be able to hug you for the effort.'
An agonized hand slowly reached out and lifted one card from the rest. It was a simple card with a cartoon of a father/daughter pair of llamas on the front and a simple greeting of 'Happy Father's Day" on the inside.
'It's still too much of an effort.'
'It's father's day. I can't *not* make a gesture.'
She bought the card and returned back to her place. Sitting down at her desk, she slowly opened the card, waiting for inspiration of what to write.
'Just say the obligatory 'I love you, Dad' and get on with it. There are things to do today.'
She rubbed her forehead to quell the argument in her head. It was the same argument for nearly all of her life - reoccurring at every holiday. Finally, she scribbled a note and closed the card. Sighing deeply she picked up her lighter and lit a cigarette, inhaling deeply to calm herself. When the glistening tears in her eyes were dry again, Emily picked up the card. She touched the end of it with her cigarette and watched it begin to burn. Then, with a disgusted flick of her wrist, she flung it into the fireplace. Her emotional side stayed quiet, watching the card burn and hoping that the ashes that said, "I love you" made it out into the world to Major Charles.
Ok, Author's note for a bit of an explanation: I woke on Saturday morning and thought about writing a Father's Day vignette for pfic. However, The Pretender does not exude Father/Daughter relationship. Father/Son yes, Mother/Son yes, Mother/Daughter, yes, but there aren't a lot of healthy father and daughter going around. (yes yes, I know Debbie and Broots, but I still wasn't fully awake when the idea came into my head) So, before I knew it I had a rather upset Emily thinking about her absent father on Father's day. However, so you all know, my dad is a great guy and I do love him. I'm also very proud of him and what he's done w/ his life. Have a good day all. 6/17/01 1:30am
