He dreams at night, and the woman lying next to him no longer smiles when she wakes up. He’s damaging something deep inside of her, but he’s not conscious when he does it.
‘You call her name in your sleep,’ she says.
He nods, unsurprised.
For the first time he tries too hard, and sex reminds him of children grinding mechanical toys together. This is a battlefield, but they are fighting different wars.
Zoe is fighting love.
He is fighting the truth.
She leaves one day. He does cry, but only because his finger hovers over the button... but he doesn’t call.
