"What?"
"Did I wake you?"
"Jarod. Looks like you won another round."
"It's not a game. There were lives at stake."
"There always are." A pause, then, softer, "I'm glad you're okay."
"I'm touched at your concern."
She tenses. "I'm the only one who gets to kill you."
This is where he should hang up. He doesn't. "Were you really worried?"
"No." A lie.
"I got lucky this time." He chuckles. "Don't worry, Miss Parker. I wouldn't dream of letting anyone else kill me."
"Jarod—"
"Goodnight, Parker."
And she realizes she doesn't want him dead.
