Marshmallows were hard to associate, Jarod decided.

Crackerjack was suspense and surprise – that was easy. A roast dinner he rarely had, as that was something he associated with family, and family was something he was lacking.

Marshmallows were difficult because they were many things – soft. Chewy. Sticky. He thought for a moment perhaps confusion, then no, because confusion wasn’t always a happy emotion and marshmallows weren’t gloomy.

In the end he chose oblivion – like the Crackerjack, yet entirely different – as while it wasn’t happiness it was welcome, and it was complicated.

Because of course, marshmallows were a very complicated thing.
