He always recognized her. He was young but he was perceptive; her visits were forbidden. And though she smiled he could sense she was never happy.

He was special and They treated him that way. She treated him with love and affection; that wasn’t what They wanted. He was young but he was perceptive; her interest and attentions were unconditional. They came, snatching like crows at carrion, to take only what They wanted.

They didn’t know it then but damage had been done.

Because he was young but he was perceptive, and he knew his loyalties would lie with her.
