Her name is Rebecca Beaumont. Everyone calls her Becky. Eight years old, with dark almond-shaped eyes and a braid down the middle of her back, she will be beautiful one day.

Her mother leaves her playing on the porch. When she goes out to call Becky for dinner, only Becky's doll Miss Lucy is there.

The whole town gets involved in the search. Posters go up, men search the woods, the women take turns to sit with Mrs. Beaumont and tell their own children to stay indoors.

They find her body three days later.
