You already know how much I love this story, but I've missed this before:

"What he saw in her eyes was something he had seen many times before in the eyes of the people he chose to help. And just like every other time, it was Miss Parker's devastated face that came to his mind when he met Lucy's eyes."

this is so wonderful and probable. I'm sure too that Jarod would think about Miss Parker's face when having something to do with traumatized children, it's so like him.
