Wow - I love the multilayered effect - the "conversation," what they are, who they are.  I've read a whole lot of death!fic by this point, and while it's easy to make me cry, you've made me respect the characters.  They're still toyed with by the hands of The Centre (by fate?) but they know their own limitations (mostly) and pushing as far as they can.  Even the obvious tragic tropes are stripped from them, leaving them as nothing but a musing fale, flat and disconnected like they are flat words and pictures in a book the reader is holding.

There are also several observations in here that are keenly true.  My favourite is the note that their relationship is about distance - but that it's the same distance, the same reaching out, even when their bodies are inches apart.

What is now bugging me, however, (just a little) is the end.  I'm assuming she shoots herself and that's the end of it (for them.)   But without confirmation, there are too many possibilities in my mind, and I'm not sure I like the idea of her going back to The Centre, or continuing on after he's gone to meet someone new, etc, etc.
